Good substitute for bacon?

I'm making a bean dish for a pot luck and I want to make it vegetarian-friendly. The recipe calls for bacon and I am quite familiar with the flavor and "something extra" adding just a little bit of bacon can do. However, since I can't use bacon, is there something I can use instead that will give the bean dish that flavor enhancement?
