Stamp postage from Machusetts to El Salvador?

A friend of mine is spending the semester in El Salvador. I have his address and want to send him a simple letter, nothing big just a few pages in an envelope. I was wondering if it would be ok to just stick 2 or 3 stamps on it? Or do I have to go to the post office and figure it out? Thanks!
