Down through time, when you failed to produce children?

in the bible it was always blamed on the woman, 'she must be 'Barren', when the inability to produce children can come from either the male or the female of the species. Also, the failure to provide a male heir was and still is ignorantly blamed on the female, when it it has been established that the of the offspring is determined by the males contribution of genetic material. Why is this so?
